The Department of Meteorology has issued a critical “Red Alert” warning today (27th). A deep depression located near Sri Lanka is expected to turn into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours.
Storm Located Near Batticaloa According to the latest forecast, the weather system is currently centered about 120 km southeast of Batticaloa. It has intensified from a depression into a “deep depression.” Weather experts say it is moving north-northwest and will likely become a full cyclone very soon.
Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Predicted The storm is expected to bring dangerous weather conditions to many parts of the country over the next few days.
Rainfall: Very heavy rain, exceeding 200 mm, is likely in the Northern, North-central, Central, and North-western provinces, as well as the Trincomalee district. Other areas could see rainfall above 100 mm.
Winds: Strong winds blowing at 60-70 km/h, with gusts up to 80 km/h, are expected across most of the island and in the surrounding sea areas.
Public Advised to Stay Vigilant Authorities have warned the naval and fishing communities not to go out to sea until further notice, as the waters will be very rough. The general public is advised to be extremely careful and stay alert for emergency updates until November 30th.
