The National Campaign for the Protection of Consumer Rights claims that large-scale RBD (Refined Bleached and Deodorized) coconut oil importers are behind the recent unprecedented price hike and warned if the Consumer Affairs Authority fails to take stern action against them, will stage a big campaign against those large scale importers.
Ranjith Vithanage, The President of the National Campaign of Consumer Protection says that the price of a bottle of coconut oil has risen by 150 rupees in the retail market. He points out that the sudden price hike is unrealistic and it has affected each household. Since 95 percent of Sri Lanka’s Coconut Oil market is dominated by imported RDB coconut oils. Vithanage further says that the Consumer Affairs Authority is accountable for protecting consumers from unfair deals and should act proactively against these market manipulations.
It has also been stated in the notice that the Consumer Affairs Authority is requested to conduct a proper investigation into the sale of coconut oil at unreasonable prices.
