The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption has once again informed former President Ranil Wickremesinghe to appear before the Commission next Monday (28). They have warned that legal action will be taken if he fails to do so.
Former President Wickremesinghe was summoned before the Commission for the second time yesterday (25) to explain a statement he made in connection with an investigation into former Uva Province Chief Minister Chamara Sampath Dassanayake. However, he did not appear before the Commission.
This is the third notice issued to the former President, following his failure to comply with two previous summonses. On the first occasion, he stated that he was not in Colombo. On the second, he claimed that his lawyer was abroad and mentioned that he would seek a date to appear before the Commission after returning to Sri Lanka.
The Commission announced this morning that it had received a letter from Wickremesinghe’s lawyer requesting to schedule his appearance for the 28th. Accordingly, the Commission has instructed Ranil Wickremesinghe to appear at 9 a.m. on that day.
The letter emphasizes that failure to appear without reasonable cause will be dealt with under Section 126 of the Act.
