As a new political era begins in the UK, Sri Lanka-origin politician and former Cabinet Minister Ranil Jayawardena lost his seat in the United Kingdom’s general election held yesterday.
Ranil Jayawardena was the Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs in former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss’s cabinet.
During the election, the Liberal Democrat candidate won the seat from Ranil Jayawardena with 21,178 votes. Jayawardena was the runner-up, receiving 20,544 votes.

During yesterday’s election, the Labour Party secured a landslide victory, ending 14 years of Conservative Party rule.
Following the Labour Party’s victory, King Charles welcomed Labour Party leader Keir Starmer.
King Charles invited Keir Starmer to form a government and become the Prime Minister of the UK.
Starmer joined the King at Buckingham Palace and officially assumed duties as the Prime Minister.
Following the meeting with the King, Starmer delivered a speech in front of Downing Street before entering his new office.
The Conservative Party suffered a dramatic collapse as it lost 250 seats over the course of a devastating night.
Following the humiliating defeat, Conservative Party leader and former UK PM Rishi Sunak said he would resign from the party’s leadership in the coming weeks.
According to records, this is the Conservative Party’s worst result in almost 200 years.
Britain’s House of Commons has 650 MPs, or Members of Parliament. Each of their “seats” represents a constituency, or district.
So far, the Labour Party has won 412 seats, while the Conservative Party has slumped to just 121. The centrist Liberal Democrats have taken 71. Reform UK, a successor to the Brexit Party, is set to pick up four seats, as is the left-wing Green Party.
