Internal sources say that this investigation has been started based on complaints received by the Criminal Investigation Department that Saddhatissa Thero, along with a YouTube activist and a TV personality, received this amount for the construction of the temple. However, the temple has not yet been built.

The Criminal Investigation Department has sought permission from the magistrate court to examine Ven. Saddharathana Thero’s bank account and the court has granted permission.

Saddharathana Thero was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department in Anuradhapura on the night of the 28th in connection with the complaint made by the Chairman of the Surakimu Lanka Movement, Ananda Sagara Thero, and for allegedly abusing the president’s mother by posting a video on social media.

The Criminal Investigation Department told the court that Saddharathana Thero had allegedly committed an offense under the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights Act (ICCPR) and Sections 120 and 485 of the Penal Code of Sri Lanka in relation to making statements that disturb religious harmony.

The court ordered the remand of Saddharathana Thero until the 7th and ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to report the charges leveled against the monk under the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
