Qatar Charity, the largest social service fund in Qatar, which was also called a terrorist organization by some government politicians, established a new office in Sri Lanka yesterday (12).
The office was opened under the aegis of Mr. Ali Sabri, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and with the participation of the Chief Executive of the Qatar Charity Fund, who is on a visit to Sri Lanka these days.
Making a note on his Twitter account, Minister Ali Sabri says that this fund came to Sri Lanka with $11.7 million. The minister also said that this aid would be used for the necessary activities under the guidance of the Sri Lankan government.
This fund became more controversial in the recent past as it was alleged that this Qatar charity had donated money to the organization called Save the Pearl of the lawyer named Hejaz Hezbollah, who had been detained for a long time. At that time, this fund was called an organization that provides funding to terrorists, and this was even stated in court.
The minister says that he met the chief executive of Qatar Charity, Al Quveri Ali Sabri, and had a long discussion.
