The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has unanimously decided not to revise electricity tariffs for the third quarter of 2025, effective from midnight today (14). As a result, the existing electricity rates will remain unchanged for the next three months, PUCSL Chairman Professor K. P. L. Chandralal announced.

Speaking at a special media briefing this morning, Professor Chandralal stated that the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) had requested a 6.8% increase in electricity tariffs for the third revision of the year.

He said public opinions and suggestions were called for regarding the proposed revision, and the process was completed on October 8.

“Actually, the Electricity Board had expected a tariff increase of more than 6.8%, considering other expenses as well. Our view was that some form of adjustment should be made based on the methodology used in previous periods  what we call the income difference adjustment,” he explained.

“The issue is that earlier, tariff decisions were made every six months, but now we have to review them quarterly. A profit adjustment for the past three quarters should ideally be made. However, the Commission decided that combining all three adjustments at once would not be appropriate,” Professor Chandralal added.
