The Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his recently appointed cabinet will be officially informed to resign by the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today (28), political sources said. The president will inform this at a meeting to be held on today evening at Presidential Palace, sources said.

The president has summoned a special discussion to be held this evening under the chair of the President

However the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has repeatedly stated that he will not resign.

The Prime Minister said he had not been notified even after the President’s statement yesterday that the Prime Minister should be allowed to go for an interim government by resigning with the Cabinet. He said he did not believe the president would make such a proposal.

However, the above sources reveal that on two occasions the President has asked the Prime Minister to step down from the position to make way for a new PM and a cabinet without any member of Rajapaka family.

Sources say that the President will consider the resignation in a timely manner as the socio-economic and political problems in the country are escalating day by day.

Meanwhile, reliable sources said that the SLPP group led by the Prime Minister Mahinda would sit on the opposition after the resignation and the President has taken steps to appoint a former minister of their own government as the Prime Minister.
