The President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has given his approval for the importation of chemical fertilizers required for agricultural activities and steps have already been taken to import agro chemicals including chemical fertilizers, the Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture Prof. Udith Jayasinghe said. He told the media that the decision was taken after a meeting with a group of experts who are contributing to the formulation of agricultural policy and that steps have been taken to prepare a new road map for the future agricultural path.
Speaking to the media Prof. Jayasinghe said that there were reports from many parts of the country that the recent heavy rains had washed away the organic nutrients applied to the crops and that farmers as well as scholars explained that it would be difficult to carry out this work with only organic fertilizers due to the prevailing weather conditions. He said the decision was taken after explaining the matter to the President. Accordingly, steps have been taken to import the required chemical plant nutrients and plant protection substances to apply the approved chemicals to the required standards, the Secretary to the Ministry further stated.
The Secretary to the Ministry further stated that it was a big mistake to stop certain chemicals which are essential for plants as well as those which are very important in agriculture.
