Revealing the next move of President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s presidential candidacy, one of the President’s closest allies, his Advisor on Parliamentary Affairs, Prof. Ashu Marasinghe, revealed that the President will contest as an independent candidate.
Prof. Marasinghe disclosed this during a press conference held in Colombo, discussing recent political developments in the country. The President’s Advisor went on to say that President Wickremesinghe is the only leader capable of developing the country and addressing its deeply rooted economic challenges.
According to the President’s Advisor, President Ranil Wickremesinghe is the only solution to the prevailing issues of the country. He also emphasized that the President has proven his capability in developing the nation.
Prof. Marasinghe suggested that since President Wickremesinghe is running as an independent presidential candidate, the citizens of Sri Lanka should support him. He pointed out that the President’s approach of inclusiveness would invite all political factions to unite with the expectation of forming a National Government if required to stabilize the nation.
The President’s Advisor acknowledged that everyone has the right to engage in politics, and as a result, the President invites everyone to build the nation. Prof. Marasinghe noted that the President would invite the entire Parliament to form a government.
According to Prof. Marasinghe, the country’s political climate indicates that it is crucial to engage in politics and that time is running out. He acknowledged that the President has to engage in politics and, as a result, has opened an office for political matters.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan government is facing several challenges as the President represented the United National Party (UNP) prior to being elected President through the votes of Parliamentarians. As the UNP has only one seat in Parliament, the President had to rely on the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), which won the General Election with a two-thirds majority.
As a result, the President is currently facing challenges as he has an obligation to fulfill the aspirations of the SLPP.
