A group led by a thug believed to be involved in drug trafficking and a local politician has wreaked havoc in Negombo this evening reportes said.
However the Army has managed to control the situation with drive out the mobs.
The armed thugs were preparing to provoke a racist riot by attacking a large number of Muslim groups near the Avendra Garden Hotel of Negombo, which was set on fire.
Sources from the area said that the group is being led by a person nicknamed Dalupotha Kele Muwa and a member of the SLPP Pradeshiya Sabha who is a supporter of a powerful politician in the area.
The Sinhalese people as well as a group of Catholic Fathers intervened to prevent the destruction being carried out by this group.
The thugs set fire to all vehicles parked on both sides of the road from the Avendra Gardens Hotel to Negombo Road. Later the army came to this place. The situation is now under control.
