At a time when the government is following a strict policy of not granting service extensions to public officers who have completed 60 years, the Police Commission has given a special service extension to the retired Superintendent of Police, DDR Dasanayake, who works as the personal assistant of the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, Western Province, Deshbandu Tennakoon.

This has been described as the only service extension in the entire police department. The granting of an extension has created a lot of dissension within the police department.

The service extension granted under the signature of Police Commission Chairman Chandra Fernando states that the service of the said police officer has been extended considering the facts presented by the Inspector General of Police.

But sources in the police department confirm that the IGP has not recommended such an extension of service for this officer.

Also, the National Police Commission itself has stated in writing that this retired Superintendent of Police has served until December 31, 2022, with an extension of service obtained after retirement.

With an extension for the year 2023, the said officer becomes the only officer with a service extension for the year 2023; this is despite the refusal of the IGP to recommend him.

It is also reported that the extension of service is recommended for this retired superintendent of police when the National Police Commission has refused to give a service extension to a senior DIG and a DIG recommended by the Inspector General.

In addition to that, several other high-ranking police officers have also applied for an extension of their service, but they have not been recommended by the Inspector General of Police or the Police Commission, either, sources at the police headquarters said.
