A second-year student from the Faculty of Management at Peradeniya University was rushed to Peradeniya Teaching Hospital today (10) after ingesting an overdose of painkillers. The student, who had been excluded from classes for alleged involvement in a ragging incident, reportedly took the drastic step after being barred from participating in this year’s exams.
The university administration had imposed a two-year ban on 10 students including this student, following an incident of bullying. After seven months, the administration decided to convert the punishment into a suspended sentence lasting one year. However, despite this modification, the student was not allowed to attend classes or take part in the second-year examinations due to the absence of 07 months.
Professor Terence Madujith, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and spokesperson for Peradeniya University, confirmed the incident and stated that the student was admitted to the hospital for treatment.
