 Parliamentarians donated over rupees nine million to the slain MP’s family!

President Ranil Wickramasinghe yesterday (14) handed over the sum of nine million rupees donated by the members of parliament to the wife of SLPP member Amarakirthi Athukorala, a former member of parliament of Polonnaruwa district who was assassinated by thuggish protestors on the 9th of May.

Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapaksa handed over the relevant check to the President at the ruling party’s group meeting held yesterday at the Parliament complex. The President presented the check to the wife and sons of slain MP Amarakirthi Athukorala.183 Members of Parliament have donated money for this charitable act.

Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapaksa said here that the “Madiwela Organisation”, consisting of 20 members of parliament of the ruling party in the Madivela parliamentarians housing complex, collected these funds for Amarakirthi Athukorala, and that it was a unique occasion that it received the support of the ruling party as well as the opposition members.

The President was requested to arrange a pension for the late Member of Parliament Amarakirthi Athukorala. The Deputy Speaker said that the family of former Matara District Minister Keerthi Abeywickrama, who was murdered in Parliament earlier, also received a pension. Accordingly, the same can also be given to the family of the late Amarakerthi Athukorala.

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa were also present on this occasion.
