Dr. Prasad Hendawitharana, President of the Government Ayurvedic Medical Association of Sri Lanka, says that taking too much nutmeg can cause poisoning in the body and that the prescribed dose should be taken only on the recommendation of a responsible Ayurvedic doctor without using local medicines in a haphazard manner.

“The Ministry of Indigenous Medicine, the Department of Ayurveda and the Ministry of Health urgently need to regulate and monitor the local medicines that are currently being offered to cure coronavirus.” he added.

He says that today various people are introducing medicines claiming to cure Covid 19 using local ingredients and as a result a discussion has arisen in the country about indigenous treatments.

Dr. Prasad points out that although many local remedies are effective as treatments, some medicines are being publicized in the media and on social media before being approved by the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine, causing people to go after unproven medicines which could lead to problems.

He also says that there is a shortage of local medicines in the market and the prices have gone up due to such unnecessary purchases.
