A group of opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) has taken the step of submitting a motion of no confidence against Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, accusing him of violating the constitution.

The motion was handed over to Deputy General Secretary Chaminda Kularatne by the opposition MPs, who presented it with the signatures of 44 lawmakers.

Led by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, the opposition alleges that Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena’s actions, particularly during the voting process to elect the Inspector General of Police and his handling of the Online Security Act, have been unconstitutional.

The opposition asserts that the Speaker’s conduct constitutes a continuous violation of the constitution and warns of potential national and international consequences resulting from his actions in facilitating government ordinances.
