Ajith Kumara, widely known as Devundara Thamil, one of Sri Lanka’s oldest and most notorious narcotics kingpins, has died due to brain cancer, prison sources said.
Devundara Thamil, a large-scale drug trafficker operating primarily in the southern region, was being held at Boosa Prison. He had been admitted to the Galle Karapitiya National Hospital for treatment following a sudden illness while on remand.
Hospital sources confirmed that he died yesterday 04 morning while receiving treatment. The cancer had originally developed in his rectum and later spread to his brain through the spinal cord.
Known as ‘Kudu Thamil’, he had been involved in drug trafficking in the southern province for decades and was regarded as the region’s oldest drug trafficker. He was previously sentenced to death in a murder case but was acquitted upon appeal on the 23rd. However, at the time of his death, he remained imprisoned in connection with another case.
