Athukorala Tea Factory, a renowned tea tourism hub in Pitigala, Sri Lanka, recently celebrated a significant milestone by welcoming its 1000th foreign visitor for the year 2025. The lucky visitor, Victor Hugh from Norway, was given a grand surprise upon his arrival.
Hugh and his group were warmly greeted with traditional Sri Lankan dance performances, the rhythmic beats of drums, and garlands made of tea leaves and fruits. Completely unaware of the special arrangements, Hugh expressed his joy and gratitude, stating that he was deeply moved by the hospitality of the Sri Lankan people. He described the Pitigala Athukorala Tea Factory as a must-visit destination for tourists and pledged to promote it globally through social media.

Anura Athukorala, Chairman of Athukorala Group of Companies, emphasized that the event was organized not just for the factory’s success but also to showcase Sri Lanka’s renowned hospitality to the world. He highlighted that the factory has been instrumental in expanding tea tourism in the country, attracting a remarkable number of foreign visitors. The milestone of 1000 international tourists was reached within just 50 days since the beginning of 2025.
The event was held under the patronage of Mr. Anura Athukorala, with the participation of a large gathering, including officers from the Pitigala Police Traffic Division.
