Lawyers from the northern region of Sri Lanka staged protests in front of court complexes in Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Mullaitivu, and Vavuniya today (25) against a statement made by Minister Sarath Weerasekera in Parliament, which was perceived as undermining the judicial system and belittling the name and judgment of the Mullaitivu Magistrate.
During the approximately one and a half hour-long protests, court proceedings at various levels in the northern region were significantly disrupted. The lawyers expressed their concerns that a government minister’s statement could potentially influence and undermine the independence of the judiciary.
Lawyers emphasized that, regardless of one’s position, everyone should respect court decisions, and if there are concerns about the correctness of a decision, the legal system allows for challenging it through proper legal channels.
