A group of school students and teachers staged a demonstration in front of Velanai Middle School in Jaffna to protest against the appointment of a non-Hindu person as the school’s principal, yesterday (25).
The appointment has caused significant unrest among the students and parents, who strongly demanded that the new principal should be a Hindu following the retirement of the previous principal.
During the protest, a conflict ensued between the students and a few teachers who did not participate in the demonstration when they attempted to intervene and disperse the crowd.
The appointment of a principal from a different religion has intensified tensions within the school, leading to disruptions in educational activities. The students initiated the agitation as they believed that the appointment did not align with their community’s wishes and values.
