There is no possibility of holding an election on or before April 25, State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura told the media following a meeting with the Election Commission.
Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardene and several others, including state minister Janaka Wakkumbura, met with the Election Commission today; their meeting ended inconclusively.
However, the Prime Minister has said that he will do justice to the demands of the Election Commission during the discussion.
It has also been agreed to arrange for the government employees who would contest the election to be appointed to a place outside their respective constituencies and pay their salaries.
The members of the Election Commission will discuss with the Ministry of Finance and issue a statement regarding elections in the future.
Provincial Council and Local Government State Minister Janaka Wakkambura told the media after the discussion that it would not be possible to hold the local government election on April 25.
Janaka Vakkumbura addressed the media and said:
“According to the current situation, it is difficult to hold the election on the 25th. Anyone can see it. Because there was no postal vote. The commission will make some statement about the way forward before April twenty-fifth.”
“The Prime Minister made a statement here that he will do justice to the demands of the Election Commission after consulting the Ministry of Finance. They also discussed how to pay the salaries of the public servants who are planning to contest the elections. He said that he would send recommendations from the Election Commission to the relevant government agencies. After that, those officials will be appointed to a place outside the division where they are going to contest, and the government will pay their salaries accordingly.”
