Namal Rajapaksa, National Organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Eksath Peramuna, has issued a letter of demand seeking Rs. 1 billion in compensation from Deputy Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Sunil Watagala, for allegedly damaging his reputation.

According to Rajapaksa’s lawyers, the Deputy Minister, during a media conference in Homagama on the 6th, presented a photograph of Namal Rajapaksa to the media, implying that he was linked to a major drug network in the country. The statement, which was widely reported by mainstream media with accompanying images, was described by Rajapaksa’s legal team as false, misleading, and made with malicious intent.

They further argue that the statement has caused serious political and personal harm to Rajapaksa’s reputation, and was also linked to the protest organized against the SLPP in Tangalle on the 8th.

Rajapaksa’s lawyers have informed Watagala that if the Rs. 1 billion is not paid, legal action will be taken to recover the damages.
