Residents in multiple areas of Polonnaruwa, including Dimbulagala, Welikanda, and Mahaweli B, have reported a surprising phenomenon where white threads resembling spider webs have been falling from the sky for two consecutive days.
In Polonnaruwa’s Jayanthipura area, a decision was made yesterday (10) to temporarily close a preschool due to the unexplained fall of these white fibers or web-like materials. The Environmental Authority is said to be conducting tests on the white particles.
Today (11) morning, observers noted that these white substances were falling in surrounding areas such as Dimbulagala, Nuwaragala, Yakwewa, Yakkure, Manampitiya, Siripura, and nearby villages including Welikanda Nelumwewa and Madhurangala.
Local residents have observed that these materials, resembling spider webs and cotton, are melting due to the sun’s heat and high temperatures. Farmers in the region have also noted that the unidentified white substances falling from the sky dissolve within seconds.
In recent days, Polonnaruwa and the surrounding areas have been experiencing thunderstorms during the night. After the rain, the following day’s heat from the sun appears to cause these mysterious materials to descend from the sky onto the ground, affecting nearby villages as well.
