Supreme Court Justice Murdu Fernando’s appointment as the next Chief Justice of Sri Lanka has been approved by the Constitutional Council (CC). She will assume office on December 2, succeeding the retiring Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.
According to court sources, Justice Murdu Fernando is the most senior judge in the Supreme Court. She began her career as a State Counsel, joining the Attorney General’s Department in 1985. During her tenure, she was also appointed as a President’s Counsel.
Over 39 years, she rose through the ranks, becoming Senior Additional Solicitor General in 2014. She was appointed as a Supreme Court Justice on March 9, 2018.
A former student of Prince of Wales’ College, Moratuwa, Justice Fernando earned her Bachelor of Laws degree from the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo. She is the eldest daughter of E.M.C. Fernando and Mrs. Fernando, both former principals.
