A woman in the Mulgampola area of Kandy was involved in drug trafficking and ended up in critical condition after swallowing drugs during a police raid.

The woman, who is 40 years old, had previously been released on bail for a drug trafficking charge in the Kandy High Court. It seems she got involved in the same illegal activity once again.

The police received information that this woman was conducting drug trafficking from a car parked in Mulgampola during the early hours of Poson Poya day. When the police officers raided the car and were about to make arrests, the woman quickly swallowed the heroin that she had in her hand.

Police investigations have revealed that this woman, known as ‘Mulgampala Akka’, has been involved in drug trafficking for some time.

At the time of the raid, there were three other people in the car besides this woman and one of them was in possession of 10 grams of heroin and the other two were in possession of 5 1/2 grams of heroin each, police said.

The police have received many complaints that drug trafficking is taking place in the vicinity of a popular boys’ school and girls’ school near Mulampola, Peradeniya Road in Kandy.

Acting on instructions from Kandy Division Senior Superintendent of Police C. K. Rathnayake, the Divisional Anti-Corruption Division Station Officer Assistant Inspector M. D. Narampanawa and a group of other officers conducted the raid.
