It is reported that some parliamentarians have even taken advances from some businessmen by promising to sell their duty vehicle import permit even before they receive it. Considering the norm that existed in the past MPs usually receive a permit to import duty free vehicles during their tenure and promise to pay it as soon as they receive it. It is reported to Lankasara that requests have been made from the heads of government.
Newly appointed parliamentarians, in particular, have made the request, telling government officials that the best way to pay off their election and political activities, as well as to pay off debt, is to sell their duty-free vehicle licenses. The reason is that they believe that they can sell it for millions as the price of the vehicles are very high at the moment.
Against the backdrop of the ban on the importation of vehicles from March 2020, Central Bank was advised to see any possibility to import the relevant vehicles to public servants, MPs and those who are eligible to obtain duty free licenses, public servants, tax paying businessmen and at the same time to import vehicles for a limited period of time for general public.
