Parliamentarian Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, who was taken into custody yesterday morning (07) at his residence in Kollupitiya, Colombo, by a team of officers from Maradankeni and Jayapuram police stations, has been granted bail by the Kilinochchi Magistrate’s Court.
Ponnambalam, accompanied by a group of individuals, visited a school serving as an examination centre for the Ordinary Level Examination in Kilinochchi, where they held a political gathering. During the event, they hindered the police in carrying out their duties, and the MP received support from a faction of his party’s supporters.
The police detained a woman and another person who was involved in supporting these activities and presented them before the Kilinochchi court.
Subsequently, as the MP failed to comply with the court’s instructions, the Maradankeni police arrested him based on a court order.
Furthermore, in relation to the incident, the Kilinochchi Magistrate’s Court issued an order on the 6th imposing a travel ban on MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, prohibiting him from leaving the country.
