Moves are in the offing to put off the local government elections by another year.
The term of the local government bodies is likely to end on the 19th, and with this, all the local governments will be placed under the purview of the provincial local government commissioners, informed sources said.
The government’s position is that this step was necessary owing to the current economic crisis the country was facing.
Accordingly, the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance has also stated that it is difficult to allocate money for the election. Based on that statement, it is reported that the government has discussed this issue at length.
This election was supposed to have been held on March 9.
However, due to the financial situation of the country, the Election Commission was compelled to put off the election until April 25. The Supreme Court also issued a directive that compelled the authorities not to withhold the money allocated for the election.
However, it has now been reported that the government is not ready to hold an election until next year.
