Moratuwa Mayor Samanlal Fernando was arrested by Mount Lavinia Police this morning today(28).
He was to be arrested today on a complaint that he had threatened a female doctor at the Moratuwa Medical Officer of Health (MOH) office and obstructed her on duty for urging to vaccinate his supporters with a token by him. He was making a dispute with health authorities while visiting the Moratuwa Molpe and Moratumulla North Grama Niladhari Divisions. However, the mayor had then surrendered to the Mount Lavinia police.
A heated exchange of words between the mayor and the doctor was reported in the media as the doctor who refused to give the injection order according to the number (token) given to a group of his supporters by the Moratuwa mayor came to get the injection order.
According to reports, the police had not received a complaint until last night regarding this indecent intervention made by a politician while implementing a government program against a government official.
Later, the Police Headquarters intervened and brought the doctor to the Moratumulla Police and recorded the complaint.
Upon hearing this, Mayor Samanlal Fernando had called an ambulance from the Municipal Council and fled the house on information that he would be arrested that night.
He has surrendered to the Mount Lavinia Police through his lawyers today. The surrendered mayor has been arrested by the police.
