The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) says that the cabinet ministers who are opposed to the agreement are calling for a strike action to force the government to cancel the Yugadhanavi New Fort Energy Agreement. However, Secretary of the Ceylon Electricity Board Ranjan Jayalal told to Lankasara that the ministers had first rejected the request of the ministers to resign from the cabinet before embarking on a serious trade union action such as a strike.
He further said that Electricity unions have not decided to go in to a strike suddenly which will be harmful for every aspects if people’s day to day life.
“Electricity strike would be a serious one. It affects every sector of the society from vaccines to big businesses. It may bring serious consequences. It will be severely affected on day to day life of people living in Colombo flats and apartments. Hence we may not go for such a serious action first. People are misled that we are going to launch a strike from tomorrow (03rd). We are only having a protest tomorrow. Not only us, will electricity engineers also accompany for the protest to be held ion tomorrow. We will decide on the strike later.
Ranjan jayalal further said that although the unions made requests from The President and The Prime Minister to discuss on this regard they were not given an opportunity to express their views to them so far.
