Sources reveal that the statement made by the State Minister for Pharmaceuticals Supply and Regulation Prof. Channa Jayasumana recently that the latest Covid pill, Molnupiravir has approved by the National Medicines Regulatory Authority is baseless and incorrect.

According to the sources of the Drug Regulatory Authority, that the experts in the  technical committee has delayed, the approval on the grounds of lack of some data about the drug. They have requested to the manufacturer to send required data for the consideration for the approval.

However, before the technical committee gave its decision, Minister Jayasumana had appeared before the media and stated that the drug was approved. It is said that the experts of the technical committee have also been severely inconvenienced due to this and the Minister has later requested the officials of the technical committee to approve this drug as he has already stated that he has approved this drug through the media. In general, however, these experts have not responded.

Meanwhile Dr. Sudarshani Fernandopulle, Minister of State for Covid Administration, stated yesterday that as far as she is known the oral Covid tablet has not yet been approved. It has not yet received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration. According to reports, the drug is expected to be released to patients in the United States as soon as it is approved.
