Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala revealed in Parliament yesterday (09) that military intelligence units deliberately obstructed the investigation into the Vavunathivu murder incident to divert attention from the planned Easter attacks carried out by Saharan Hashim and his group.
On November 30, 2018, two police officers at the Vavunathivu police station were murdered. During the investigation, intelligence officers arrested a former LTTE member named Ajanthan and produced evidence claiming that he was responsible for the killings.
However, the Minister announced today that an attempt to create false evidence, including leaving Ajanthan’s motorcycle jacket under a culvert near the crime scene to implicate him, has been uncovered. One intelligence officer involved in this false investigation has already been arrested, and a group of others is expected to be arrested soon.
“One of the two revolvers belonging to the murdered police officers was later found at the Wanathavilluwa Lacto Estate. The other revolver was discovered hidden in a chimney of a safe house in Ninthavur, based on a statement given by Saharan’s driver, Gaffoor Mama, who was arrested after the Easter attacks,” the Minister stated.
“This clearly shows that the Vavunathivu investigation was deliberately misled. The real perpetrators have now been arrested,” he added.
