Sri Lanka’s Excise Department has announced that W.M. Mendis Company’s arrack production will be suspended if the company fails to settle its unpaid VAT, amounting to over five billion rupees, by the 30th of this month.
Due to these continued defaults, the Excise Commissioner has moved to restrict operations at the Welisara liquor factory owned by W.M. Mendis Company. To ensure compliance, a team of officers has been deployed to monitor and enforce the production restrictions.
Despite the restrictions, Mendis Company still has the opportunity to pay the outstanding tax balance by the deadline. However, the unpaid tax amount has now surpassed five billion rupees.
Additionally, three directors, including company owner Arjun Aloysius, have been serving sentences of rigorous imprisonment since October 18th for failing to adhere to prior tax payment orders.
