Arjun Aloysius, the director of WM Mendis Company, currently in jail for his involvement in a VAT fraud amounting to 3.5 billion, yesterday requested to be admitted to the prison hospital. However, prison authorities have rejected this request, according to prison sources.
Aloysius has been placed in a regular jail cell and assigned to the sewing section of the Industrial Works Department at Welikada Prison.
It was also reported that hospital authorities had previously decided that politicians and well-known individuals entering prison would only be admitted to the prison hospital if their medical condition was deemed serious. Prison sources confirm that Aloysius is being held in the A-2 cell, which houses regular inmates. On the 15th, he wore the standard prison dress commonly known as “Jampare” and had the common “kalderam” rice served to inmates.
His family is permitted to visit him once a month.
