Political sources suggest that former President Maithripala Sirisena, embroiled in controversy over his assertion of knowing the mastermind behind the Easter Sunday massacre, will face mounting pressure to reveal all during an upcoming parliamentary debate.
Agreed upon in a party leaders’ meeting today (06), a three-day debate is slated to commence when Parliament reconvenes on April 24th, marking its first session after the new year. The debate centers on Sirisena’s statement, made amidst growing public demand for clarity on the tragic 2019 Easter Sunday terrorist attack, which occurred during his tenure as head of state.
The main opposition, Samagi Jana Balawegaya, spearheaded the call for the debate. The former President’s recent assertion stirred fresh controversy, prompting extended questioning by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and a court summons, which Sirisena declined.
