The Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka has warned that the Victoria, Randenigala and Rantambe reservoirs have begun to spill following continuous heavy rainfall in their catchment areas.
Dharmadasa Mahatha, Director of the Main Dams and Reservoirs Operations Division of the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka, said the volume of water released from the Rantambe Reservoir into the Mahaweli River through the Minipe Inlet will vary depending on prevailing rainfall conditions.
He noted that water levels in the Mahaweli River could rise further if additional discharges are made from the Loggalbala, Hasalaka and Ulhitiya dams, or if increased inflows from the Sudulu Oya directly enter the river system.
In view of the potential rise in river levels, the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka has urged residents living in downstream and low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, as conditions could change rapidly depending on rainfall and reservoir operations.
