It is reported that Nuwara Eliya District Member of Parliament Jeevan Thondaman, who also serves as the General Secretary of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC), has decided to resign from his post as General Secretary.
Jeevan Thondaman has spoken by telephone with several vice presidents of the party and informed them to convene the CWC National Council to take a decision regarding his resignation.
According to a senior vice president of the CWC, the decision follows the defeat of the 2026 budget proposal of the Agarapatana Pradeshiya Sabha, where the CWC holds the chairmanship. After the defeat, a telephone argument reportedly took place between the current Chairman of the CWC, Sendhil Thondaman, and the party’s General Secretary, Jeevan Thondaman. As a result of this dispute, Jeevan Thondaman has decided to step down from his position as General Secretary.
The senior vice president further stated that Jeevan Thondaman has also requested CWC municipal councillors in the local government institutions of Talawakele–Lindula, the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council, Hanguranketha, Walapane, and Kotmale to submit letters withdrawing their support for the government.
Meanwhile, although the General Secretary informed party officials by telephone to convene the CWC National Council, a senior vice president noted that the National Council would be convened only if the request is submitted in writing.
