The United National Party (UNP) this week expelled 54 of its members for handing over nominations for the upcoming general election under the banner of the Samaga Jana Balawegaya (SJB) led by Sajith Premadasa. The expulsion of the MPs was done with the approval of the party’s working committee.
The 54 members were among the 102 whose memberships were suspended previously pending a disciplinary inquiry. Members expelled include former UNP stalwarts such as Sujeewa Senasinghe, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Ajith P. Perera and Ranajn Ramanayake. However leader of the SJB, Sajith Premadasa was not included and UNP sources said a decision on his membership will be taken on a later date.
Meanwhile 61 provincial councilors have also been expelled from the UNP. The list of members expelled is as following :
