A millionaire businessman has been arrested in the Kiribathgoda today (21) while he was illegally reclaiming a swamp. He had been filling up a swamp on Dalupitiya Road in Hunupitiya in the Kiribathgoda Police Division for some time and the enforcement unit of the Land Reclamation Corporation had raided the landfill and arrested by Kiribathgoda Police.
It is said that this businessman is a close supporter of a powerful government businessman who has a political base in the Kelaniya area and it is said that these illegal landfills have been carried out using his political power, causing severe damage to the environmental balance in the area. The arrested person is Anura Wijetunga, a businessman involved in container operations.
He is due to be produced in court and an official of the Land Reclamation Corporation told Lankasara that unauthorized land reclamation is an unbailable offense under Act No. 13 of 2021.
