The Keheliya Rambukwella Model Primary School in Kundasale has been renamed by Central Province Governor, Prof. SBS Abeykoon. The school, located in the Wattegama Education Zone in Kandy, was previously named after former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella.
However, the Governor has now ordered an immediate name change following a proposal from the structural committee of the Provincial Education Department. The school will now be called Kundasale Royal Primary School.
The decision came after various trade unions and parent organizations, including the Ceylon Teachers’ Union, led by Secretary Joseph Stalin, advocated for the change. These groups raised concerns following allegations against Rambukwella regarding the importation of substandard Immune Globulin vaccines.
Originally, in 2012, the school had been named after Rambukwella as part of the “Lagama Pasala Hondama Pasala” (The Closest School is the Best School) initiative by the Central Provincial Education Department. With the recent decision, the institution will now be officially recognized as Kundasale Royal Primary School.
