Dr. Krishantha Perera, a surgical oncologist at Galle’s Karapitiya National Hospital, has been transferred with immediate effect to the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital, according to a letter issued by the hospital’s director, SDUM Ranga. The letter states that the transfer is part of ongoing disciplinary proceedings.
The transfer order, which is subject to additional disciplinary actions and approval from the Health Services Committee of the Public Service Commission, takes effect immediately. Dr. Perera has been officially relieved of his duties at Karapitiya Hospital as of today.
The Karapitiya Hospital medical staff recently initiated a symbolic strike, protesting Dr. Perera’s alleged threats toward two of their members. The Government Medical Officers’ Association had announced plans to escalate this to a full strike today. Dr. Perera also faces accusations of inappropriate conduct toward both medical staff and auxiliary workers.
Despite these allegations, sources describe Dr. Perera as a compassionate and responsible professional who prioritizes patient care. However, ongoing ideological differences between the Government Medical Officers’ Association and Dr. Perera reportedly contribute to continued tensions within the hospital.
