Karapitiya Doctors Protest Against Cancer Surgeon Over Alleged Threats and Assaults on Colleagues

Doctors at Karapitiya General Hospital in Galle have launched a union protest against cancer surgeon Dr. Krishantha Perera, following accusations that he assaulted, scolded, and threatened three specialist doctors yesterday (November 1st.) Since last evening, the hospital’s medical staff have been engaged in union action over the incident.

Reports indicate that Dr. Perera allegedly abused and threatened fellow cancer surgeon Dr. S.D. Mahaliyana in an operating room. Later, in the consultants’ lounge, he reportedly issued severe threats to oncologist Dr. Jayamini Horadugoda. Additionally, he allegedly abused and attempted to assault pediatric nephrologist Dr. Harshani Dharmawardena near the same area. The doctors have since filed complaints with the relevant authorities.

In response, representatives of the Government Medical Officers’ Association at Karapitiya have discussed the incident and reportedly decided to file a police complaint. They have refrained from normal duties and confined only to emergencies, Pediatric, Nephrology, and Oncology duties since the last evening.

This is not the first incident involving Dr. Perera; he has faced prior allegations of violent behavior towards both medical and minor staff and was once arrested for assaulting a female minor staff member. The Ministry of Health is currently considering disciplinary action, and sources suggest that Dr. Perera may soon be transferred to another hospital.
