The Jaffna Diocese on the 3rd expressed its disapproval of the government’s proposal to develop Katchatheevu Island as a tourist destination.
Speaking at a media conference held at the Thiruvalluvar Cultural Center in Jaffna, the head priest of the Diocese, Father Joshapdas Jebaratnam, stressed that Katchatheevu is regarded as a sacred place. He further stated that he expects the President to hold discussions with the Jaffna Diocese before making any decisions on the matter.
At a time when Tamil Nadu politicians have been engaged in propaganda claiming that “Katchatheevu belongs to India and should be reclaimed,” Father Jebaratnam emphasized that the island belongs to Sri Lanka and that no one else can lay claim to it.
