Amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, reports from international media indicate that Pakistan is playing a crucial behind-the-scenes role in efforts to end the conflict.
According to The New York Times, a proposed 15-point plan aimed at halting the ongoing war has been conveyed to Iran through Pakistan. The report states that Pakistan’s Army Chief, Syed Asim Munir, has emerged as a key intermediary between Washington and Tehran and is expected to communicate with Iranian leaders regarding the proposal.
Several US and Israeli media outlets, citing unnamed officials, have reported that the plan outlines major conditions for de-escalation. These include dismantling Iran’s three primary nuclear facilities, halting uranium enrichment within the country, suspending its ballistic missile programme, limiting support for regional proxy groups, and reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
In return, the United States is expected to lift nuclear-related sanctions on Iran and provide assistance for its civilian nuclear programme, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Washington is seeking a month-long ceasefire to facilitate discussions
Further reinforcing these claims, Israel’s Channel 12 reported that Washington is seeking a month-long ceasefire to facilitate discussions on the proposal. Meanwhile, Reuters cited a source familiar with the matter confirming that a US plan had indeed been sent to Iran.
Despite these developments, there has been no official confirmation or response from either Washington or Tehran. However, statements by former US President Donald Trump suggesting renewed communication with Iran have added weight to speculation that diplomatic channels are actively being pursued.
If confirmed, Pakistan’s involvement could mark a significant diplomatic shift, positioning Islamabad as a key mediator in one of the most volatile geopolitical crises in the region.
Islamabad is a potential venue
Meanwhile Pakistan Prime Minister Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif earmarked Islamabad as a potential venue for negotiations between Irania and USA.
Making his remaks on his ZX, (Twitter) he said Pakistan stands ready and honoured to be the host to facilitate meaningful and conclusive talks for a comprehensive settlement of the ongoing conflict. The PM has tagged the note with US President Donald Trump, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
