On his return to the country, former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is likely to take up a higher position in the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and enter Parliament as a member through the national list.
Informed sources said this proposal was presented at a recent meeting chaired by the national organiser of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Basil Rajapaksa.
However, the same sources said that there is a division within the party over this proposal. One group has spoken in favour of this proposal, while another group has opposed it
Gotabhaya Rajapakse, who fled the country on July 13 due to mass protests, is scheduled to return to Sri Lanka in early September. According to a member of Parliament for Podu Jana Peramuna (SLPP), following his arrival, he is likely to take up a high position in the party.
A senior official of the Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), however, said that even though such a proposal has been presented, no official discussion or final decision has been taken in this regard so far.
