Dr. Vijith Gunasekara, Chairman of the National Drug Regulatory Authority, has initiated an immediate investigation following the tragic death of a young woman at Ragama Hospital due to an allergic reaction to a vaccine.
In light of the incident, Dr. Gunasekara emphasizes that Amoxiclav, being a penicillin-type vaccine known for its potential allergenic effects, necessitates hospital staff to possess a thorough understanding of a patient’s drug allergy history before administering such vaccines.
The director underscores that when allergies are evident in response to a vaccine, various precautionary measures should be implemented to safeguard the patient’s life. The hospital staff is actively working to ascertain whether these necessary measures were taken. Consequently, a comprehensive investigation at the hospital level is underway, limiting further details that can be disclosed at this time.
