The Galle Prison Superintendent’s Office reports that an inmate in Galle Prison has died after contracting a fever and being admitted to Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.
The deceased is a 29-year-old resident of Kottavagama, Yakkalamulla. He developed a fever while in prison and passed away after being admitted to Karapitiya Hospital.
Another inmate is currently receiving treatment at Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital due to fever.
The post-mortem examination of the deceased was conducted today (04) at Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.
According to the prison’s capacity, it can hold up to 120 inmates. However, current reports indicate that there are 998 inmates detained, leading to concerns about overcrowding and the rapid spread of infectious diseases like fever within the prison.
