In a show of continued support and regional solidarity, the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, H.E. Santosh Jha, distributed humanitarian aid to members of the fishing community in the Mullaithivu district of the Northern Province. The event took place at the Mullaithivu District Secretariat.
The assistance package included deep freezers and high-quality fishing nets, aimed at improving the livelihoods and working conditions of local fisherfolk.
Governor of the Northern Province, Hon. Nagalingam Vethanayagan, Member of Parliament Hon. (Dr.) Sellaththamby Thilaganathan, Mullaithivu District Secretary Mr. A. Umamaheswaran, and several representatives of fishermen’s societies were present at the event.
Speaking at the occasion, High Commissioner Jha emphasized the strong historical and cultural ties between India and Sri Lanka, noting their shared heritage and maritime bond. He praised the resilience and hard work of the fishing communities and highlighted India’s ongoing commitment to supporting their welfare through sustainable and empowering development initiatives.
This assistance forms part of India’s broader efforts to uplift fishing communities across Sri Lanka, fostering economic growth, self-reliance, and regional cooperation.
