The Indian government has decided to tighten security along the Indian coast to prevent illegal immigrants from entering fro Sri Lanka after Indian intelligence reported that a large number of straved Sri Lankans were fleeing the country due to the current economic crisis.
According to Indian media reports, the Indian Navy, Coast Guard and Police have beefed up security in Andhra Pradesh, which has more than 500 fishing villages.
India has been paying close attention to this intelligence forecast after a Sri Lankan Tamil couple who went to Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu on a fishing boat from Mannar with their two children was detained by the Naval Police at Mandapam yesterday. They have been taken into custody by the Naval Police at Mandapam.
To date, 20 Sri Lankan Tamil families have illegally migrated to Tamil Nadu seeking asylum.
