According to the Pope, priests can now bless same-sex couples as long as these blessings are not incorporated into regular church rituals or liturgy. The Vatican’s doctrinal office clarified that while irregular conditions of blessing are not legitimized, God accepts all. The release of the eight-page document titled “The Pastoral Meaning of Blessings” outlines the pastoral approach pastors should adopt in special situations, including an 11-point section specifically addressing “Informal Occasions and Blessings of Same-Sex Couples.”
The Catholic Church maintains the position that same-sex attraction is not a sin, but homosexual acts are. Pope Francis has been working towards fostering greater acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community within the Church while upholding moral principles since his election.
